We are headed to Italy on November 4th, taking with us three of
San Francisco's great chefs so that they can see their oil being
crushed at the frantoio. It will be an exciting trip
with visits to Rome, Puglia, Le Marche, and ending up with three
days at Frantoio Olivestri in Umbria where we will taste
first-hand their olio nuovo. We will bring back some samples
and get things ready to fill your orders.
We are placing our olio nuovo order with the factory before we
leave so that things can get under way while we are traveling.
We expect that it will arrive in San Francisco via
air shipment before the first week in December. We will get
shipments out to you right away.

By the way, olive trees are
biannual producers - an abundant year, followed by a
weak year. So, the pattern we have seen from last
year to this is entirely expected. Of course,
there are many other things that affect the oil's
quality. |
Quality of this Year's Oil:
Guido Vestri has told us that the harvest this year is "Poco,
Poco!" Little, Little. This usually signals that the
oil is going to be intense, grassy and peppery. We can only
hope so. Guido does say, "È
buonissimo !" It is
wonderful.
Price: The bad news is that with a
small harvest the price always goes up (that old
supply/demand rule). The good news is that the € is down vs. the $, so we feel fortunate that we are able to
hold the
price to the same as last year. We're hoping that the inflated
fuel costs have not skyrocketed the air freight costs.
When to Order:
Now!
We have ordered a
hefty increase over last year, but there will be only one
delivery. We are accepting orders on a strictly
first-come-first serve basis. Believe us too, we are taking
extraordinary measures to insure the palate of oil doesn't
fall off the back of the truck this
year! Still, we are sure the demand will be very aggressive. So get your order in
early. Don't get left out.
If you place your order while we are in Italy between 4 and
15 November, you will not get a confirmation until we return.
When Available: We are
planning to ship your orders by the first
week of December. This is very dependent on the weather for
the harvest, the FDA, customs and Homeland Security. But we
have become quite adept at moving the process along, so our hopes
are high that there will not be delays.
What Will be Available: We
are again offering the stunning olio nuovo from
Frantoio Olivestri.
There are
5-liter tins of
Fiordolio and .75-liter bottles of
Siloro, DOP Umbria, winner
two years in a row of the Gold Medal.
Filtered / Unfiltered:
This year, we will only bring in unfiltered olio
nuovo. We think we have been confusing a lot of folks
with our dialogue on filtered and unfiltered. The fact is, nuovo
oil should be experienced just as it is in Italy - fresh from
the spigot with no alterations. If you are worried about
the oil spoiling, don't. This oil is filled with polyphenols and
will keep for a very long time. If you have been
accustomed to buying one filtered and one or two unfiltered
tins, just get your unfiltered now and wait for the others until
the spring when we will have lots of the new year's filtered oil.
Gift Boxes: Treat your
friends and family to the unique pleasures of olio nuovo.
We have beautiful gift boxes for your oil, including one and two
bottle, and a very nice combination gift with nuovo oil, pasta and a
jar of sauce or tapenade. Keep these in mind
for interesting and wonderful corporate or personal holiday gifts.
Spread the Word:
Let your friends and relatives who love delicious olio nuovo
know about this rare opportunity to secure this once-a-year nectar.
We are one of the few sources in the U.S., and our quality is
impeccable.
