Frantoio Visit

Up
Petrignano del Lago

Hey Howard --

We just returned from Italy.

Our group had an absolutely fantastic time at the Frantoio. The Vestri family gave us an incredibly warm welcome. We (all 17 of us) visited the mill and then went upstairs to taste oil on freshly grilled bruschetta with wine and cheese and salami. Then we all (with Mauro, Guido, and Beverly) went to Gulliver for a fantastic meal. Boy was it good!

Mauro acted as a wonderful host in his flamboyant style and charmed adults and children alike. Up to that point in the trip, some of our group hadn't had the opportunity to talk to any local people. This was a wonderful experience for them, and for all of us.

You will certainly have some new customers for this year's shipment!

Thanks So Much!

Ted

If you are going to be visiting Italy, let us know if you would like to visit the frantoio to see how the olive oil is made.

Here's what one customer said of the experience.

Mauro is the English-speaking cousin of Guido Vestri, the oil producer.  His good friend Beverly is an American jazz singer living in Rome who joined the festivities.  Gulliver is a restaurant near the mill and is the kind of local country place you always hope to find, serving genuine, delicious food.

Proprietors: Guido & Francesca Simoncelli

If you want to stay in the area, one of Guido Vestri's daughters, Francesca and her husband, also Guido, have opened a delightful bed and breakfast in a lovingly restored century-old town house, right across from the frantoio.  They have furnished the house with charming antique furniture and beautiful linens.

All the rooms at Villa Petrinia are very generous and have brand-new modern private baths, several with large verandas. Guido and Francesca serve a nice breakfast, included in the extremely reasonable room rate.

Petrignano del Lago is a perfect place to use as a base for day-tripping to some of Umbria's and southern Tuscany's most enchanting sights.   Here are just a few:

Cortona (9 mi.) of "Under the Tuscan Sun" fame.
Arezzo (24 mi.) home of the spectacular fresco cycle The Legend of the Cross by Peiro del San Francesco.
Montepulciano (13 mi.) a charming hill town and home of a most famous wine.
Siena (46 mi.) one of Italy's most famous Tuscan towns
Perugia (36 mi.) Umbria's best passeggiata, a not-to-miss museum and escalators that whisk you up, up, up to the centro right through Etruscan ruins.
Assisi (50 mi.) With the Basilica of St. Francis and Giotto's stunning frescos.
Deruta (47 mi.) for the home of the best pottery in Italy.
Gubbio (78 mi.) For one of the best medieval hill towns in Italy.
.... and many more lesser know but charming hill towns waiting to be discovered.

Here is a link to a map and directions to find Villa Petrinia at Petrignano del Lago.

I have a nice travel article on following the works of Peiro del San Francesco from Sansepolcro to Arezzo with a lovely stop in the charming town of Anghiari, a nice round-trip day trip from Petrignano. You can read it here: Anghiari.
